All dogs must leave the Shelter on a leash. Please bring a leash. If you are interested in any of the County dogs, please email us or call the Shelter at 585-343-6410 option 7 for more information.

VFA Rescue Dogs

Adoption Procedures

Volunteers For Animals periodically pulls dogs from other shelters to free up space; this helps avoid euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals. We are able to do this through the generosity of many people such as the originating shelter staff, transporters, foster volunteers and others who help with pulling fees, vet bills and finding good homes once they are here.

The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the rescues animals can range from $100 to $300 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS.

If you are interested in any of the Rescue dogs, please email us. Do not call the Shelter regarding rescue animals - they have no information about these dogs. All rescue animals are in foster homes with volunteers - NOT at the Shelter - unless otherwise noted.

Adopted! Onyx is one of our Path To Home Dogs who was adopted earlier this summer. We are sad to say that he is in need of a new home, though no fault of his own. One of his family members is having serious medical problems and they can no longer care for him. Onyx is still with them but VFA will be screening to assist with rehoming. Here is some information from his family.

Onyx is lovable mix of Dalmatian and Hound.  He weighs 55 lbs. is about 1.5 to 2 years old. Onyx is neutered, house trained, chipped (paid for one year), crate trained.  He knows and obeys military signs for sit, down, stay and leave it. He is fully vaccinated. Onyx loves people, loves to play and very loyal.  He is good with other dogs and older children, but no cats please. The only reason Onyx is leaving us is a family medical condition. Please consider him.

Please email us at info@vol4animals.org if you are interested in this wonderful pup.

Path to Home Program

Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 8 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide weekly training classes for the dogs and the inmates. The inmates will then work daily to reinforce the formal training with the dogs.
