Genesee County Dogs

Adoption Procedures

There is a $60 NON-REFUNDABLE FEE for all animals which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered there is a $35 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT upon proof of surgery. An adoption application must be filled out at the Shelter by the person wishing to adopt the animal. Once the application has been reviewed and approved the potential adopter may visit and meet any of the animals.

If you live in Genesee County, all dogs must be licensed BEFORE leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that license dogs are not open on the weekends. All dogs must leave the Shelter on a leash. Please bring a leash. If you are interested in any of the County dogs, please email us or call the Shelter at 585-343-6410 option 7 for more information.

Clay is an adult neutered male Hound Mix. He weighs about 50 lbs. Clay is an all around good dog. He is an excellent walker and seems to be good with other dogs. Come meet this handsome guy soon!

Pending Adoption! Akira is a 4 year old spayed female Husky Mix. She is good with children and other male dogs but no cats please. She is housebroken and crate trained. Akira is like most huskies, she is an escape artist so we would prefer she go to a home with a secure, fenced in yard. That would give her the opportunity to romp and play to her hearts content!

Holly is an 8+ year old female Shih Tzu. She will be spayed prior to adoption.

Adopted! Ivy is an 8+ year old female Shih Tzu. She will be spayed prior to adoption. Ivy came in heavily matted so her fur had to be shaved down. She is a very sweet dog who just loves people.

VFA Rescue Dogs

Adoption Procedures

Volunteers For Animals periodically pulls dogs from other shelters to free up space; this helps avoid euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals. We are able to do this through the generosity of many people such as the originating shelter staff, transporters, foster volunteers and others who help with pulling fees, vet bills and finding good homes once they are here.

The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the rescues animals can range from $100 to $300 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS.

If you are interested in any of the Rescue dogs, please email us. Do not call the Shelter regarding rescue animals - they have no information about these dogs. All rescue animals are in foster homes with volunteers - NOT at the Shelter - unless otherwise noted.

Willow is a 1 year old female Red Heeler. She weighs about 25 lbs. She is a little shy and timid with new people and surroundings. She is a good walker and is good with other dogs but no cats please. Willow will be spayed prior to adoption. She is currently in a foster home.

Lucie is a 1 year old spayed female Beagle. She is crate trained and housebroken if kept on a schedule. Lucie is good on a leash, good with children over 5 and good with other dogs but no cats please. She is currently in a foster home.

Path to Home Program

Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 8 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide weekly training classes for the dogs and the inmates. The inmates will then work daily to reinforce the formal training with the dogs.
